There are four components in our blood.
Lets know about Granulocytes.
Granulocytes play a crucial role in our immune system, defending our bodies against infections caused by bacteria and fungi.
Unfortunately, some patients face challenges in producing enough granulocytes on their own, especially during treatments like chemotherapy or after transplantation.
That’s where granulocyte donation becomes a vital lifeline.
What Are Granulocytes?
Granulocytes are a type of white blood cell that actively fights infections.
They patrol our bloodstream, seeking out and destroying harmful invaders.
When a patient’s immune system is compromised due to illness or treatment, granulocytes become even more critical.
Who Needs Granulocytes?
- Cancer Patients: Chemotherapy can suppress the bone marrow’s ability to produce granulocytes, leaving patients vulnerable to infections.
- Transplant Recipients: After receiving a new organ or bone marrow, patients often require granulocyte support to prevent infections.
- Clinical Center Patients: Those with severe immune system impairments rely on donated granulocytes to fight off life-threatening infections.
The Donation Process:
- Eligibility: Anyone between the ages of 18 years and 75 years can donate granulocytes. Donors must weigh at least 50kgs and have previously donated blood cells.
- Preparation: Donors receive medication the day before donation to boost granulocyte production.
- Apheresis:On the donation day, granulocytes are collected using a process called apheresis. Like platelet donation, this takes approximately two to three hours. Donor blood passes through a kit attached to a cell separator device. The device separates blood cells, retaining granulocytes and returns other blood components to the donor.
- Safety: The pre-donation medication is approved for donor use, and all collection kits and procedures adhere to the guidelines.
