KNOW ABOUT COVID VACCINE

The corona pandemic started in the year 2019 and its affects are still continuing around the world.

Lockdown, curfew and restriction in travels everything is going on but still the spread is going on around the world.

The medical associations started clinical trials in treating covid-19 and finally created vaccine for covid that can make the virus weak, resulting in mild fever or cold than making it severe infection.

It is better to get vaccinated as soon as possible in order to get rid of this virus.

Some vaccines were developed, passed the trials and imported/exported to other countries as well.

Let us know about the vaccines.

Covaxin:

Covaxin is an inactivated vaccine made up of killed corona viruses manufactured  by Bharat Biotech in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) – National Institute of Virology (NIV).

This vaccine is developed using Whole-Virion Inactivated Vero Cell when injected into our body, recognizes the dead virus, and prompts the immune system to make antibodies against the corona virus.

  • Covaxin has an efficacy (stops infection) of 78% for mild, moderate, severe covid.
  • It can be stored at 2 degrees Celsius to 8 degrees Celsius temperature.
  • It is a 2 dose vaccination regiment given with a gap of 28 days.
  • It is approved by 9 countries.

 

Covishield:

Covishield is an Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine manufactured by the Serum Institute of India and developed by UK, is made from a weakened version of a common cold virus known as adenovirus from chimpanzees, encoding the SARS-CoV-2 spike glycoprotein.

  • Covishield has an efficacy of 70% after first dose and 90% after second dose.
  • It can be stored at 2 degrees Celsius to 8 degrees Celsius temperature.
  • It is a 2 dose vaccination regiment given with a gap of 12 – 16 weeks.
  • Approved by 130+ countries.

 

Sputnik V:

Sputnik-V

Sputnik V  vaccine developed in Russia uses a cold type virus that delivers small fragment of coronavirus inside our body which is harmless.

This vaccine is works almost same as AstraZeneca aka Covishield vaccine.

After exposing a part of this virus to our body, it allows to recognize the threat and learn to fight it off without the risk of becoming ill.

This means that the immune system is allowed to fight with coronavirus when it encounters.

  • Sputnik V has an efficacy of 92% protection against Covid-19.
  • Pregnant woman are advised not to avail this vaccine.
  • It can be stored at 2 degrees Celsius to 8 degrees Celsius temperature.
  • It is a 2 dose vaccination regiment given with a gap of 21 days.
  • Approved by 68 countries.

 

Sputnik Light:

Sputnik Light is a single dose vaccine to be launched in India.

  • It was around 80% effective against the virus after 28 days of vaccination.
  • It can be a boost to India to maximize the vaccination drive.
  • It can be stored at 2 degrees Celsius to 8 degrees Celsius temperature.

 

Pfizer:

Pfizer-BioNTech is the first covid vaccine authorized for emergency use in United States. It is an mRNA vaccine similar to moderna vaccine.

This vaccine is recommended above 16 years people.

It is similar to moderna vaccine.

  • It is a 2 dose vaccination regiment given with a gap of 21 days.
  • Its efficacy is 85% after first dose and up to 98% after second dose.
  • It can be stored at 2 degrees Celsius to 8 degrees Celsius temperature.
  • Approved by major countries but not available in India at present.

 

Moderna:

Moderna

Moderna vaccine is developed in United States and it is an mRNA vaccine.

  • It is a 2 dose vaccination regiment given with a gap of 28 days.
  • Its efficacy is 94% after two doses.
  • It can be stored at 2 degrees Celsius to 8 degrees Celsius temperature.
  • Approved by major countries but not available in India at present.

 

Johnson & Johnson:

Johnson & Johnson

Johnson & Johnson vaccine was developed in United States – Belgium.

  • It is a single dose vaccination regiment.
  • Its efficacy is 74%.                                                      
  • It can be stored at 2 degrees Celsius to 8 degrees Celsius temperature.
  • Not available in India at present.

These are some of the vaccines available and new vaccines can be expected soon.

If you experience any severe allergic reaction after first dose of vaccine, consult the doctor immediately.

If doctor confirms that the allergy is due to vaccine, it is better not to have second dose of vaccine.

Please do not use self medication for the symptoms caused after first dose of vaccine.

Use medicines after doctor prescription only.

There is no evidence that after the vaccination we cannot get infected with covid.

We have to practice social distancing, wearing masks, and sanitization even after vaccination.

Whatever variant comes in future, there is only one solution for us, i.e., to improve immunity levels, controlling sugar levels, habituating healthy lifestyle.
