EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT CONVALESCENT PLASMA THERAPY AND DONATION

blood components

Before getting to know about the importance and awareness of convalescent plasma donation, let us know about plasma first.

There are four components of our blood.

This donation is nearly the same process as platelets donation. First, let us know about Plasma.

WHAT IS PLASMA?

plasma

It is a pale yellow coloured liquid-like component present in the blood comprising of about 90% water.

55% of the blood consists of plasma. Its main purpose is to keep our blood pressure in a healthy range.

plasma bagsIt carries necessary hormones, proteins, nutrients and minerals to different cells in our body.

It contains proteins and antibodies that are important for clotting and immunity and help fight the infections and also contain salts, enzymes.

USES OF PLASMA:

It helps in treating infectious diseases, burns, trauma, transplant surgeries and cancer and so it is high in demand.

It improves our muscles and bones grow as well as clotting factors that help stop bleeding if we get any injury.

CONVALESCENT PLASMA DONATION BY COVID RECOVERED PERSONS:

plasma donation procedure

The plasma that is extracted from COVID recovered patients is known as convalescent plasma.

On May 2020, FDA (Food and Drug Administration) said to people who had recovered from COVID-19 to donate convalescent plasma for convalescent plasma therapy, as it may contain antibodies that can help the person fight with the infection.

plasma group compatibility

People who have recovered from COVID-19 and having AB blood group, have a plasma that is of universal type i.e., people with any blood group can receive it from the AB group safely.

People who have COVID-19 and having O blood group, can receive it from people with any blood group safely.

This is completely different from universal blood group i.e., O negative.

Plasma once extracted, can be stored upto 1 year and the plasma extracted from COVID recovered persons for therapy can be used within 3 months.

This donation is safe and risk-free.

Currently, convalescent plasma is extracted from persons who had recovered from COVID-19 for therapy and extracted from those who had completed 28 days from the day of getting COVID positive.

This convalescent plasma from COVID recovered person is preferable than that from the normal person because recovered person plasma contains some kind of protein, known as an antibody that helps in fighting the infection.

This therapy is done in order to improve the COVID patient recovery chance and his survival chance.

But mostly it depends on the criticality of the patient as well and his response at the time of therapy.

Eligibility for Donation:

  • Donor should be in the age group between 18 – 65 years.
  • Weight should be above 50kgs.
  • Donor should be COVID recovered and must have completed 28 days from the day of getting positive.
  • Donor must have COVID positive result report. COVID negative result report is optional while going for donation.

PROCEDURE TO DONATE PLASMA:

plasma therapy machine
  • To donate convalescent plasma, the recovered patient has to submit his positive report as well as a negative report at the time of donation in blood banks.
  • Once the report checking is done, he is asked about some health-related questions and checks for blood pressure, body temperature, haemoglobin levels.
  • Plasma is collected only after 28 days of recovery because a person needs time to build enough antibodies in him.
  • Person who is regular blood or platelet donor has to take a gap of four weeks from the last donation if donating plasma.
  • Dedicated plasma donation takes around 1 hour.
  • Blood passes through a needle inserted to the donor’s hand. The machine removes plasma from blood and sends blood back to the donor’s body through the same needle from where it was extracted to machine
  • Donor needs to take rest for 10–15 minutes after donation in order to overcome dizziness.
  • The plasma is formed within 48 hours of donation, in a healthy donor.

After donation, donor observes some dehydration as plasma consists of almost 90% water. It is better to drink water before donation and after donation to recover that loss.

COVID recovered person can donate it once every week for 3 months from the date of getting positive, as antibodies extracted during this period are very much useful for improving the antibodies in the patient.

COVID recovered persons no need to fear like if we donate, what will happen to us? The antibodies will get generated as soon as possible in our body.

So you are helping the patients who are in critical condition and unable to generate antibodies in them.

People, who are COVID recovered and have the following health problems, are ineligible to donate convalescent plasma.

  • Age less than 18 and more than 65.
  • BP more than 140 and diastolic less than 60 and more than 90.
  • Diabetic on insulin.
  • Hypertension with a change in medication within 28 days
  • Cancer survivor
  • Kidney, heart, lung or liver disease.

If you are COVID recovered person or if you know COVID recovered person, educate them and make aware of this donation and come forward to donate voluntarily.
